Canada Celebrates United Nations Day
The Government of Canada today
released the following statement commemorating the 63rd anniversary of the
founding of the United Nations:
Since 1945, the UN has been
the central forum for promoting international peace and security, human
rights, democracy and the rule of law—the fundamental principles of
global stability and security.
In an increasingly
interconnected world, the role of the UN as a forum for international
cooperation is more important than ever. Regional problems, more and more,
are becoming global concerns, and the UN is in a unique position to foster
international solutions to challenges as wide-ranging as the food crisis,
climate change and the situation in Darfur.
International peace and
cooperation are among the goals of Canadian foreign policy, as
demonstrated by the country’s work in Haiti and Afghanistan. In both
countries, Canada works within a UN mandate.
Canada has a strong history of
making contributions to the UN, and values the opportunities it provides
for international collaboration in the fields of human rights, peace and
security. Along with Canada’s missions in Afghanistan and Haiti, our
engagement in Sudan reflects our commitment to these important issues.
Canada recognizes the need to
both strengthen the UN and make it more effective. The Government of
Canada applauds the efforts already under way in this regard, and looks
forward to working with its partners as the reform process deepens.
Canada has been an integral
member of the UN since the founding of the organization, and looks forward
to playing a key role in the future by working with UN bodies to achieve
the organization’s goals of international peace and security.
