NEW SESSION - NEW ENERGY FOR HAMPTON AND THE NDPQUEEN'S PARK - NDP Leader Howard Hampton started the new legislative session by welcoming a new MPP to his caucus - newly-minted Parkdale-High Park MPP Cheri DiNovo. "New Democrats are excited about getting back to work at Queen's Park. We are proud to have Cheri DiNovo as the newest member of a strong, principled and effective NDP opposition. Her new energy and fresh ideas will make our team that much more effective standing up for Ontario's working families," Hampton said. The NDP Leader made the comments after welcoming DiNovo to Queen's Park. Today, DiNovo will take her seat in the Legislature for the first time after a convincing by-election victory over the McGuinty Liberals on September 14th. With the Harper Conservatives in Ottawa and election-focused McGuinty Liberals in Ontario, it is more important than ever to have a strong NDP team at Queen's Park standing up for working families, Hampton said. "With an Ontario election just a year away and the McGuinty government in full pre-election mode, it is more important than ever for the NDP to hold the government accountable so working families can distinguish between Liberal election spin and real results," Hampton said. After three years of McGuinty Liberal weak leadership and broken promises on the issues that matter most to everyday people, there is a lot to fight for this legislative session, Hampton said. "Ontario's working families want green power, not nuclear power. They want first-class public hospitals, not second-rate private-money hospitals. They want good schools, not more school cuts. They want more good jobs, not more manufacturing and forestry layoffs. They want waste diversion, not mega-dumps. They want help for autistic kids and an end to child poverty, not more empty rhetoric. They want good clean government, not gutter politics," Hampton said. "On these issues and so many more - this legislative session - working families can count on the NDP to stand up and fight for them for real results, not more McGuinty broken promises," Hampton said.
