Karygiannis outraged at Kenney's language
remarks
OTTAWA - The
Honourable Jim Karygiannis, Member of Parliament for
Scarborough-Agincourt, expressed outrage at remarks made by Minister of
Citizenship and Immigration, Jason Kenney, indicating that he wants to see
new regulations to ensure anyone who is a citizen can speak either English
or French.
"Immigrants
come to Canada looking for a better life.
They arrive, get a job, work hard, save their money and they bring
their husband/wife, children and parents to share their new life in
Canada." said Mr. Karygiannis. "Most
new immigrants to Canada come from places where education is a luxury.
If they have problems reading and writing in their native tongue,
how are they going to become fluent in English or French?"
Minister
Kenney has recently gone on record indicating "that people who move
to Canada 'need to exercise freedom of expression responsibly'." and
that his department would be reviewing all its public service grants to
remove state support from groups that advocate hatred.
The new regulations with respect to language proficiency will
disadvantage the spouses and parents of new Canadians.
"Kenney
is wrapping his words in cotton-batten, but they express intolerance and
show a bias toward immigrants coming from first world countries." Mr.
Karygiannis stated. "Kenney
is resurrecting the old Reform mantra that Canada needs to turn back the
clock to the 1950's. While
his remarks appear innocuous, they express the worst kind of hatred.
The Prime Minister must fire this Minister and ask him to leave
their Caucus."
