Karygiannis Announces
Funding
For
Marine Security Project for Toronto
TORONTO – The Honourable Jim Karygiannis, P.C., M.P., Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport (Scarborough-Agincourt) announced today, on behalf of the Honourable Jean-C. Lapierre, Minister of Transport, $607,325.00 for the Toronto Port Authority to enhance security. The Marine Security Contribution Program, announced in May 2004, is a three year, $115 million program. The Marine Security Program will help Canada’s ports and marine facilities modernize and strengthen their security systems and programs. This program is part of the $308 million National Security Policy announced in April, 2004, which sets out a six-point plan to strengthen marine security across Canada. “The improvements will benefit the port and marine facilities in Toronto, helping to strengthen the security of our marine system.” said Mr. Karygiannis. “The security of Canadians is at the heart of this program and remains one of the Government’s top priorities.” The enhanced security improvements will include perimeter security; access control measures; and, security and surveillance equipment. – 30 –
