Nicosia, Jan 10 - The contract
to rebuild the town and community of Artemida in Greece which was
critically damaged during last summer's catastrophic forest fires will be
signed tomorrow.
The specific contract, exceeding 8.5 mil, will be signed between the
Ministry of the Interior and J&P ABA company.
The project includes work on 80 structures, of which 48 are residential.
The main square in Artemida village will be reconstructed and renamed
"Cyprus Square".
The overall cost of rebuilding Artemida is estimated at 14.5 mil.
Last September the Government of Cyprus pledged to undertake the cost of
rebuilding the town. So far it has allocated 300,000 to anti-flood
projects around the village.
In addition, a team of Cypriot town planners, architects and civil
engineers have visited the area and submitted a report to the Government
regarding the urgent needs for the reconstruction of the village.
President of the Republic of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos visited the area
in November and was briefed by the Greek Government and local authorities
on the problems they face regarding its reconstruction.
The town was among the communities hardest hit by the wild fires in August
of last year which burned down dozens of homes and thousands of acres of
farmland, killing at least 50 people in the surrounding area. Thirteen
residents died outside Artemida on August 24 after being trapped by flames
whilst attempting to flee to the main town of Zacharo.
