Karygiannis holds urgent community meeting following the deadly landslide in Guinsaugon, Philippines OTTAWA – Together with members of the Filipino community, The Honourable Jim Karygiannis, Member of Parliament for Scarborough-Agincourt, will hold an urgent community meeting regarding today’s deadly landside in Guinsaugon, Philippines. “My thoughts and prayers are with the survivors of this devastating landslide, with their anxious family members here in Canada and with Canadian personnel in the region.” said Mr. Karygiannis. After two weeks of heavy rains and a 2.6 magnitude earthquake, the mountain side above Guinsaugon let go. At least 1,500 people are missing, including 276 children who were attending school when the slide hit. Frantic rescuers, digging with whatever is at hand have rescued some people, but the loss of life is expected to reach as high as 90 percent. “The Harper government must step up to the plate and show leadership by providing substantive aid.” Karygiannis further commented. “At tonight’s meeting, the community will discuss their priorities as the international community responds to the rescue, recovery and relief efforts underway overseas.” The meeting will be held: Friday,
