“Lost Canadians” Bill
fails Canadians: Karygiannis
TORONTO,
ONTARIO - The Honourable Jim Karygiannis, Member of Parliament for
Scarborough-Agincourt, today criticized the Harper government for creating
future “Lost Canadians”. Today,
the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration introduced Bill C-37 “An Act
to amend the Citizenship Act” in the House of Commons.
“While
Bill C-37 seems to correct the problems of the past, it will create a new
generation of “Lost Canadians”. said Mr. Karygiannis.
“This is unconscionable.”
Bill C-37
amends the existing Citizenship Act and addresses the Canadian Citizenship
of War Brides and their children. However,
the Bill limits Canadian citizenship to all children born abroad of
Canadian parents who were themselves born abroad of Canadian parents.
“In
fulfilling the Reform agenda, the Harper government is, once again,
pitting one Canadian against another.”
Mr. Karygiannis commented. “The
government is disallowing second generation Canadians born abroad to claim
their birthright.”
Mr.
Karygiannis is a member of the Standing Committee on Citizenship and
Immigration (CIMM) and will be introducing a Motion in Committee this week
with respect to this issue.
Mr.
Karygiannis’ fourth child was born abroad.
