 Karygiannis questions Conservative Throne Speech

OTTAWA – The Honourable Jim Karygiannis, Member of Parliament for Scarborough-Agincourt, questioned the Harper Government’s Throne Speech, delivered today by Governor General, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean.

“They talk about accountability but choose to appoint a Senator to Cabinet.” said Mr. Karygiannis.  “This Minister cannot be questioned by Members of Parliament and held accountable.  Where is the accountability?”

Today’s Throne Speech stated “communities are increasingly under threat of gun, gang and drug violence.”  The Liberal platform called for the banning of handguns, in conjunction with the provinces and territories.  “Not only will they not ban handguns, they are going to dismantle the Gun Registry.” Mr. Karygiannis further commented.

The Liberal Government had committed $5 billion for the creation of the Early Learning and Child Care system and had agreements signed with 8 provinces to build affordable, quality day-care.  “Under the guise of allowing parents’ choice, the Harper Government has gutted the Early Learning and Child Care system.”  Mr. Karygiannis said.

The Harper Government’s Speech from the Throne stated that “Canadians have paid their taxes to support our system of public health insurance” and “The Government will support and enable innovative approaches to health care”.  In response to the Ralph Klein “Third Way” (a plan that would allow patients to get better or faster service if they are willing to pay for it), Mr. Harper indicated that he was waiting for an assessment of whether Klein's proposals would violate the Canada Health Act.  “The Speech from the Throne and Harper’s previous comments leave not doubt – if you have the money, you’ll get health care, if you don’t have the money, too bad.” said Mr. Karygiannis.
