Greek Minister of National Education and Religious Affairs Marietta Giannakou Koutsikou Visits AHI Hellenic House Headquarters(L-R) Minister Marietta Giannakou-Koutsikou with AHI President Gene Rossides and Greek Ambassador to the U.S. Alexandros Mallias.Washington, DC — On March 29, 2006, the Greek Minister of National Education and Religious Affairs Marietta Giannakou-Koutsikou accompanied by a small delegation of the Minister’s staff and advisers and by the Ambassador of Greece to the U.S., Alexandros Mallias, visited the American Hellenic Institute’s headquarters, the Hellenic House. While at the Hellenic House, the Minister met with members of the AHI leadership, including AHI Legal Counsel Nick Karambelas, AHI Member Emmanuel Rouvelas, AHI President Gene Rossides, Executive Director Nick Larigakis and the AHI staff. During the one-hour meeting, the discussion centered on new ways in which the Greek government is addressing higher education including regulating the state system with new legislation, exchange programs, multi-cultural education including programs for minorities and human rights, as well as the training of teachers. Additionally, she discussed new language programs, creating European schools, and Greek as a second language abroad. “We were honored to have Minister Giannakou-Koutsikou visit Hellenic House and we look forward to working together on matters of mutual interest,” said AHI President Gene Rossides.
