Canada Games Diversity
Agreement Signed by Partners
The
2005 Canada Summer Games is proud to introduce their Diversity Initiative
– an initiative to make the Games truly reflect the diversity that is so
much a part of Canada’s identity. This
project is the first of its kind in Canada, and is the first stage of a
broader national plan to ensure that diversity is a key element of future
Games. The Games’ Diversity Initiative has two goals: to
increase acceptance of diversity by all Canadians; and to develop a
partnership model for the organization and delivery of the Canada Games
which can be fostered and promoted to other major Games.
Today,
the 2005 Canada Summer Games Host Society invited representatives from all
levels of government, various multicultural and special interest groups to
gather and sign an official Diversity Agreement.
This agreement publicly reflects the community’s commitment to
integrating individuals from every walk of life into the event, in
particular into the extensive volunteer needs. “An
essential element to the success of our Games is our volunteer team,”
said Bob Ellard, President of the 2005 Canada Summer Games.
“With over 6000 volunteers required, the 2005 Canada Summer Games
truly depends on the support of our community.
Because the community will come together for the Games, we want our
team to be a genuine representation of Regina, of Saskatchewan and of
Canada.” The
Diversity Initiative is the result of a Diversity in Sport grant
provided by the Multiculturalism Program of Canadian Heritage.
It is hoped that this written public agreement will foster
relationships with under-represented groups in the community and make them
feel welcome at the Games. “Canada’s
strength depends on its ability to draw upon the skills, talents, and
expertise of all its citizens,” said the Honourable Raymond Chan,
Minister of State (Multiculturalism).
“Thanks to this initiative, the 2005 Canada Games will
demonstrate how major events can benefit from the full participation of
all sectors of society.” "The
Canada Games Diversity Initiative reflects the City of Regina's commitment
to the belief that equal opportunity and treatment should exist for all
people," says Regina Mayor Pat Fiacco. "We are proud of our
City's heritage and have a wonderful cultural program that will highlight
local talent in an atmosphere of fun and celebration at the 2005 Canada
Summer Games." The
initiative and this agreement will leave a legacy for Regina and the
province of Saskatchewan. The
agreement will also provide a model of diversity for future Canada and
Olympic Games to come. For
